Title: Coordinates and coordinate-like polynomials

Time: 11:00 - 12:00

Location: HG00.304

There is coffee and tea in front of the lecture room from 10:45h.

A coordinate is a polynomial that is a member of a coordinate system (i.e. a minimal generating set) of the polynomial ring. A simply stated but deep question is "When is a polynomial a coordinate?".
We will discuss some of the history of this problem, consider some concrete examples of coordinate-like polynomials, and highlight some of the difficulties that arise in answering this question, even in simple cases.
